Properties
Akun is a benzoyl peroxide-based acne dermocleansing bar. The mechanism of action of benzoyl peroxide is unknown; but it is known that it is decomposed in the skin by cysteine, releasing oxygen free radicals that oxidize the bacterial proteins in the sebaceous follicle, thus reducing the number of bacteria and the irritation caused by fatty acids. Its effectiveness in the treatment of acne vulgaris is mainly attributed to its antibacterial activity on Propionibacterium Acnes, the predominant bacterial agent in sebaceous follicles and comedones of acneic skin. 5% is absorbed through the skin where it is metabolized to benzoic acid and is then excreted as benzoate in the urine. Akun eliminates acne-causing bacteria, dries up breakouts, helps peel skin, and reduces the number of comedones (pimples) that block pores. It also has a slight drying effect, which destroys excess oils, bacteria and dirt that build up above and below the skin. Akun has no effect on sebum production or the spread of dead skin cells, it should be used with caution and only on areas affected by acne.
